PUBLICATION & REVIEW GUIDELINES

Publication Timelines

YJIS publishes three times each year in the Spring, Summer, and Winter. The publication date for each issue is  April 30th, August 30th, and December 30th respectively. The call for papers for each issue opens around January, April, and August and usually runs for about three to four weeks.

To maintain diversity among authors represented in each issue, papers submitted and accepted for publication in an earlier publication cycle may, at the discretion of the Editorial Board, be scheduled for publication in a subsequent issue.

Review Process

The review process at YJIS consists of  the following seven steps:

  • Desk Screening: All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial desk screening by the editorial board which is composed of graduate student editors assigned by the Editor-in-Chief. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two student editors.

  • First Round Review: Each manuscript that passes the desk review will undergo a double-blind peer review (by external reviewers). Based on the reviewers’ consensus, the manuscript will fall into one of the four categories below:

    1. Publish without revision

      • The manuscript is of sufficient quality to be published in its current form after stylistic editing. No additional revision is necessary, unless desired by the author(s).

    2. Publish after revision (minor revision)

      • The manuscript is accepted on the condition that the author addresses the adjustments suggested during the First Round Review. The Second Round Review will be conducted only to check whether the relevant changes have been made.

    3. Revise and resubmit

      • The manuscript is under consideration pending revision. It may be published after undergoing appropriate adjustments. The issues to address are communicated to the authors after the First Round Review. The Second Round Review will re-evaluate the manuscript but, unlike “publish after revision,” publication is not guaranteed even if the relevant changes have been made by the authors.

    4. Not suitable for publication

      • The manuscript’s quality is deemed insufficient for publication at this time. The manuscript is returned to the author along with the reviewers’ comments. Once the author feels that they have substantially improved the quality of the manuscript, they are free to resubmit it during any of the following publication cycles.

The editorial decisions are finalized based on the following matrix:

  • First Round Edit: After the first round review process, authors will receive the reviewers’ overall comments and detailed feedback. For manuscripts receiving a “revise & resubmit” or “publish after revision” decision, authors will be given a 1-month revision period. Authors must submit a revised manuscript along with a letter summarizing the revisions. For manuscripts receiving a “publish without revision” decision the authors are free to submit a revised version if necessary. The authors of manuscripts receiving a “not suitable for publication” decision will be notified of the result.
  • Second Round Review: the revised manuscripts and response letter submitted by the author will be sent to the reviewers. Reviewers then decide whether to “publish” or “reject” the manuscript. If a decision is made to “reject” the manuscript, a brief explanation will be provided. The editorial decisions are finalized according to the criteria below:

*Upon request, YJIS may issue a certificate confirming that a manuscript is scheduled for publication. Such certificates will be issued only after the manuscript has received a final acceptance decision and any required revisions have been completed.

  • Student Editors Review: For manuscripts that have received a final acceptance decision, the student editorial team will conduct a final editorial review to ensure compliance with the journal’s style and formatting requirements. This review will include verifying the accuracy of references and confirming the DOIs of cited sources, where available.

  • Final Author Checks: The edited manuscripts are sent back to the authors for final review.

  • Publication: Once the review process is complete and the issue is published, the reviewers will receive a review fee.

Reviewer Selection

The YJIS reviewers are selected by the editorial board members at editorial board meetings that are held once per publication cycle after desk reviews. The board members receive all of the submissions ahead of time. During the editorial board meeting, the board members confirm the desk review decisions and select reviewers for the manuscripts that pass desk review. The reviewers are selected on a basis of how well their research expertise matches the topic of the submitted manuscript.

Objection Procedure

Authors who have objections to the editorial decisions should submit a complaint to the Editorial Board. Only the submissions that passed the desk review stage may be appealed. The authors may appeal the decision within 30 days of receiving the decision. Manuscripts under appeal must not be submitted to other journals until the appeal has been fully processed. To file an appeal, the authors should send an email to editor@theyonseijournal.com starting with Appeal: [Manuscript number and title] in the subject line.

Reasons for initiating the appeal procedure include:

  • Factual errors in the review document

  • Inappropriate procedures during review

  • Conflicts of interest

  • Unethical behavior by reviewers

If the objections are deemed reasonable, a new review process will be started, handled by the ethics editor. New reviewers will be appointed to assess the manuscript. In any case, the appeal decision is communicated to the authors.
